Job Description
As the Diesel Mechanic at PWI, you are responsible for keeping our fleet of semis and delivery trucks safe, reliable, and road-ready. Your work centers on preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and other critical systems, with occasional support for yard equipment such as forklifts. By catching issues early and completing repairs efficiently, you help ensure our fleet keeps deliveries moving on schedule and safely.
Responsibilities
- Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine inspections, oil changes, fluid checks, and scheduled maintenance on semis, delivery trucks, and diesel equipment to prevent breakdowns and extend vehicle life.
- Diagnostics & Repair: Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and manufacturer specifications; complete repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, and exhaust systems.
- DOT Compliance & Safety Inspections: Perform DOT-required inspections and ensure all fleet vehicles meet federal and state safety and emissions standards.
- Emergency & Breakdown Repairs: Respond to unscheduled breakdowns and complete timely repairs to minimize fleet downtime and missed deliveries.
- Yard Equipment Support: Assist with maintenance and repair of yard equipment such as forklifts and other material handling equipment as needed.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, and repair documentation for each vehicle in the fleet.
- Shop Safety & Organization: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment, following proper procedures for tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.

Education or Experience
- 5+ years of diesel mechanic or heavy-duty truck maintenance experience.
- Experience with semi-truck and delivery vehicle maintenance and repair preferred.
- Experience with DOT inspection standards preferred.
- Formal diesel technology training or certification preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- CDL preferred, but not required.
- ASE certifications (diesel engines, brakes, or related) preferred, but not required.
Other Skills & Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and hydraulic systems.
- Proficient in the use of diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Strong troubleshooting and mechanical problem-solving skills.
- Basic computer skills for maintenance record-keeping.
Physical Abilities
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach and use hands and fingers to handle or free objects.
- The use of common hand tools and occasionally sharp tools are involved.
- The employee frequently is required to talk, hear, and communicate with other employees both in person and while using a telephone.
- The employee must be able to move and/or lift objects up to 50 pounds often.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Cognitive and Communication Abilities
- Able to perform basic math using money, weight, and distance measurements.
- Able to communicate and present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees in both verbal and written forms.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or blueprint form.
